Getting to Southampton Airport from Poole & Bournemouth
Southampton is the closest major airport to BCP. Distance, drive time, parking costs and why a short transfer often beats driving and parking for a weekend away.
Southampton Airport (SOU) is the closest major airport to the BCP conurbation, and for European city breaks and Channel Islands hops it's often the smartest choice. Here's what the journey actually looks like from Poole and Bournemouth.
How far is Southampton Airport?
From central Bournemouth it's around 28 miles; from Poole, about 32 miles. The route is simple — A31 east to the M27, then a couple of junctions to the airport at Eastleigh. Off-peak it's a 35–45 minute drive, making it comfortably the shortest airport run we do.
Why Southampton is underrated
Because it's small and close, Southampton is a genuinely low-stress airport. Security queues are short, the single terminal is a five-minute walk end to end, and the train station is right outside if you're connecting. For flights to Amsterdam, Dublin, Edinburgh, Jersey and Guernsey, it often beats the London airports on total travel time even when the fare is a little higher.
Drive and park, or take a transfer?
This is the one route where driving yourself is tempting — it's close, after all. But do the maths:
- Airport parking: £30–£60 for a long weekend in a short-stay or "meet and greet" car park, more at peak times.
- Fuel and wear: two 30-mile legs.
- The hassle: finding the car park, the shuttle bus, then doing it all in reverse when you land tired.
A pre-booked transfer from BCP to Southampton is typically £60–£85 for a standard saloon, door to terminal. For a couple or a family, that's frequently cheaper than parking once you add fuel — and there's nothing to organise at either end.
Timing your pickup
Because the drive is short, the temptation is to leave late. Don't cut it too fine:
- For a European flight, be at Southampton 2 hours before departure.
- The M27 around Southampton gets busy at rush hour — a 7–9am pickup can add 20 minutes.
- For early flights, we still recommend confirming your pickup the day before.
Cruise connections
Southampton is also the UK's biggest cruise port, a few miles from the airport. If you're doing a fly-cruise or heading straight to the terminals (Ocean, Mayflower, Horizon, City), we time the drop-off to your embarkation window — see our services for cruise transfers.
